The Richard Record Rising Stars Concerto competition is entering its 22nd year! This is a high-level piano and instrumental competition bringing in the top high school performers from Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. This year’s competition will be on Saturday, January 23, 2021 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
LaCrosse Symphony Orchestra presents…
22nd Annual Richard Record Rising Stars Concerto Competition
Saturday, January 23, 2021 Closed Competition: 8:30am –3:00pm (approx.)
Viterbo University – LaCrosse
New Format: Because of the unusual pandemic situation we find ourselves in this year, the LSO’s concerto competition will be making a few changes. We are eliminating the open-to-the-public finals competition on January 23rd. Students will perform in a closed audition on that day. All auditions will be recorded so we can air the performances of the top six students the following Saturday (January 30th) on the LSO’s YouTube channel. Award winners will be announced at the end of that telecast. At this time, the top four winners will be performing at the March 6th LSO concert as the guest artists for that concert. (If things change and we are not able to have a live performance, the prize monies will still be awarded.)
Safety Protocols: We will be observing various safety protocols during the event. There will be disinfectant and paper towels in practice rooms. The performance pianos will be disinfected between each audition in the Recital Hall. The only people in the Recital Hall will be the judges, the student, and the accompanist. We will practice social distancing. Masks will be required. Once you are done with your audition, you may return home.
Eligibility: High school students (grades 9-12) from Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. (Students completing high school early are eligible if they are not currently enrolled in higher education at the time of the competition.) The first-prize winner is not eligible to enter the year following their win.
Prizes and Awards:
- $2000 cash award
- $1500 cash award
- Two $1000 cash awards
- Two $500 cash awards
Repertoire: Only one movement is to be selected (unless otherwise specified) from the competition repertoire list. The movement must include parts of the introduction, cadenza (if applicable), and finale within the 10-minute period.
Fee: Non-refundable $40 entry fee payable to the LSO must accompany the application form.
- Music must be memorized and no longer than 10 minutes in duration.
- All auditions must be done with piano accompaniment. Contestants are to provide their own accompanist.
- If the LSO is able to perform a full-concert in 2021, the top four winners must be available to rehearse with the LSO on Thursday, March 4th and Friday, March 5th and to perform with the LSO on Saturday, March 6th . Attendance at the guest artist’s luncheon on Friday, March 5th is also expected.
- Applications must be postmarked no later than November 23, 2020 and sent with the $40 fee to:
