Ryan McNamara - Maple Plain, MN

Winner of the $1000 Richard Record Piano Award
Beethoven – Piano Concerto No. 5, Mvt. 1

Mr. McNamara studies with Dr. Paul Wirth. He placed 2nd in the 82nd annual Schubert Club Competition and has performed with the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra. Ryan also plays the violin and is an accomplished composer.

Akornefa Akyea - Fitchburg, WI

Ms. Akyea studies with Mary Wilkosz. She has won concerto competitions with the Madison Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, and the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras. She won the Thomas Skogen Award at last year’s LSO concerto competition.


2007 Recipients

Mr. Birdsall studies with Dr. Joseph Zins and has appeared on the national radio program “From the Top” twice. He has been a featured guest with the Mississippi Valley orchestras.

Ms. Bennett is a student of Almita and Roland Vamos and Marko Dreher at the Music Institute of Chicago. She has performed with the Central Iowa Symphony, the Des Moines Symphony, the Iowa State University Symphony, the Oskaloosa Symphony Orchestra and the Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra.

Kyle Coolidge - 2005 Tri-State
Concerto Competition Winner

Kyle Coolidge won the LaCrosse Symphony Orchestra's 6th Annual Rising Stars Tri-State Concerto Competition by performing the Saint-Saens 2nd Piano Concerto in G minor (1st movement) flawlessly.14-year-old Kyle has been playing the piano for the last six years and currently studies with Bill Lutes. He lives in Baraboo, WI along with his parents, Mark and Patty, and two brothers.

In October of 2003, he entered the Madison Symphony Orchestra Fall Youth Concerto Competition (playing the third movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto #23) and was selected as a winner to perform with the MSO in their Fall Youth Concerts in November of 2003. Kyle will also perform the Saint-Saens concerto with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra in May, 2005.

Kyle enjoys listening to musical recordings made by famous pianists. His favorite composers are Liszt, Brahms, Schumann, and Chopin. Kyle has been home schooled since the age of six, and hopes to be a concert pianist. He also enjoys playing chess and the works of Mark Twain.

Krista Stewart - 2004 Tri-State Concerto Competition Winner

Krista Stewart, age 14, is a freshman at Middleton High School in Middleton, WI and studies violin with Eugene Purdue (the past 6 years) and, recently, also with David Perry. As a student at the Aspen Music School the past 3 summers, she studied with Naoko Tanaka and Dr. Won-Bin Yim, performed in Young Artist recitals and master classes with Robert McDuffie and Pamela Frank, and was in the Violin I section of the Aspen Festival Orchestra. As 2004 winner of the Concord Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition and the Madison Symphony Orchestra High School Concerto Competition, Krista will solo with those orchestras in March. She has also been a featured soloist with the Midwest Young Artists Orchestra (as Overall Open Division winner of the 2004 Walgreens Competition), the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra (as winner of their 2003 Young Artist Competition), the Madison Symphony Orchestra (as winner of their 2001 Fall Youth Competition), and the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra (member 6 yrs.). She also competed as a semi-finalist in the Johansen International Competition in Washington, D.C. (March, 2003). On April 15, 2004 she was invited to perform on a taping of the national public radio program "From the Top" with Christopher O'Riley in Minneapolis, MN. Krista is a 5 yr. member of the Eleve Arte Quartet which was a quarter-finalist in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2002. Hobbies include downhill skiing, tennis, and rubber stamping

Rachael Ryan - 2003 Tri-State Concerto Competition Winner

The goal of the Rising Stars program is to attract and display the finest young musicians from Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Z93 and Dick Record, generously sponsor this competition for solo artists of high school age.

For the winner, the reward is the Betty Scheie Memorial Award ($1000) and the opportunity to perform his or her work with the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra at a regular season concert. For such "Rising Stars", this experience can be a stepping-stone to a lifetime of musical performances.

The final competition is free and open to the public. This season the concerto finals will be 3pm, Saturday, January 17, 2004, at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Fine Arts Center in the Annett Recital Hall. Please plan to join us. We know you will enjoy seeing the tri-state's most talented young musicians.
